Follow the Travel Guide Along the Townships Trail

2009-07-01, De Tourisme Cantons-de-l'Est
Coaticook, June 17, 2009 – La Corporation de gestion du Chemin des Cantons is the organization behind the Townships Trail (a tourist route) and during this morning’s regional meeting at the Pavillon des arts et de la culture in Coaticook, it launched two valuable tools to help visitors discover the Eastern Townships.

The Travel Guide

Lavishly illustrated, beautifully written and peppered with lively anecdotes, the Travel Guide offers an in-depth look at the people behind the history of the Eastern Townships and examines how the rural landscape has shaped the settlement and economic development of our region.

The Travel Guide is divided into eight MRCs (regional municipalities) and leads the reader, step by step, along the Townships Trail. The book also includes a mini-guide of the architecture of the Eastern Townships, which identifies the diverse building styles in the region : the traditional Georgian houses with their characteristic galleries; an industrial heritage that is typified by the Woollen Mills at Ulverton; and the many different church denominations - Anglican, Baptist and Evangelical. Also showcased (under the heading Coups de cœur!) are heartwarming profiles of the people of the Eastern Townships. (7,000 copies of the French version of the Travel Guide have been printed. An English version will be available in August, 2009.)

Friends of the Townships Trail

Making a trip along the Townships Trail even more fun to discover are the 14 local enterprises that offer visitors accommodation, dining and interesting little « discoveries ». They include le Coffret de l’Imagination in Coaticook (a restaurant/boutique); Banc de Marguerite in Richmond (a co-operative that sells healthy, regional produce); Vert Le Mont B & B in Sutton and Au Diable Vert, an outdoor centre in Glen Sutton, that is surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery. And don’t miss Lac-Brome (Knowlton). This year, Auberge Knowlton, the oldest hotel in the Eastern Townships, is celebrating its 160th anniversary. How about giving yourself a treat in Danville? Book into Gîte MCallum, a four-star B & B, then tickle your taste buds with a delicious dinner at Le Temps des Cerises – a one-of-a-kind restaurant that is housed in a former church.

Story telling time

To showcase the historic character of the Townships Trail, Hélène Deslauriers, coordinator for the Corporation du Chemin des Cantons, assigned Mike Burns, an Irish storyteller, the daunting task of creating a lively tale about the American, Brisith and French-Canadian origins of the Eastern Townships. First presented on stage, L’Eau de la Vie (The Water of Life) was adapted (in French and English) by the storyteller who has embellished the original text with his own imaginative touches. Coming soon!

In August, an English version of the Travel Guide will be available and it could be accompanied by a pack of three CDs (English and French). The CDs, narrated by Rita Morin and Michel Garneau, bring two centuries of the region’s history alive through music, legends and profiles of popular artistes. The three-CD pack costs $20 and comes with a road map of the region. (For $5 more, you can get a copy of the Travel Guide as well.) The pack will be available from regional tourist offices, at certain tourist attractions and through the Les Amis du Chemin des Cantons section of the Townships Trail website : www.townshipstrail.qc.ca.
